3 Simple and Inexpensive Tips for Winterizing Your Home

Winter is around the corner! Here are three easy tips to prepare your home for the cold weather ahead:

1. Check the Furnace

  • Ensure Functionality: Turn on your furnace to verify it’s working properly. Expect a slight odor initially, which is normal after a period of inactivity.
  • Regular Maintenance: Replace furnace filters monthly during the heating season to improve airflow and efficiency.

2. Reverse the Ceiling Fan

  • Optimize Heat Distribution: Reverse the direction of ceiling fans to run clockwise. This pushes warm air downward and circulates it throughout the room, helping to keep you warmer.

3. Insulate Exposed Pipes

  • Prevent Frozen Pipes: Wrap exposed plumbing with pre-molded foam rubber sleeves to insulate against freezing temperatures.
  • Outdoor Protection: In warmer climates, insulate outdoor spigots with Styrofoam cups or similar materials to prevent freezing.
